If I hear the expression “modest is hottest” one more time, I’m going to rip my hair out. Seriously, can women do anything without offending someone? Sorry, but it’s 90+ fucking degrees out, I’m wearing short-shorts.
The people crying for women to “respect themselves” and dress “modestly” actually have zero respect for women. They see women not as autonomous beings with a right to self-expression and their own sexual identity, but as objects awaiting men’s (and other women’s) evaluation.
Here’s why women are actually told to dress modestly:
1. Women’s bodies are seen as inherently sexual (and sexuality as inherently bad, of course). Everything about us – our legs, our cleavage, even bare shoulders or a bare stomach – is inappropriate and offensive and needs to be covered up. This is a total double standard; men are never told to dress “modestly” because their bodies are not seen as sexual.
2. Despite this, women are seen as inherently less sexual than men, in their behavior and desires at least, and are therefore the gatekeepers of sexual morality. Women are responsible to not lead a man into temptation, rather than men being responsible for their own sexual behavior (side note: this is why women, and only women, are slut-shamed. Men just can’t help themselves. Women should know better.) This is often where people turn to biology, and claim that men just “naturally” get distracted by things like cleavage, and if a woman doesn’t want to be ogled, she should dress like a six-year old. But really, we don’t have to dress to accommodate a man’s sexual immaturity and lack of respect for women, and don’t let anyone tell you different.
3. This clothing-based version of slut-shaming reinforces traditional gender roles. If a woman dresses to please herself, especially if she dares to have her own sexual identity and sexual confidence to go along with it, she threatens the old-school gender dynamic.
4. Ultimately, it’s about control. This crossover between slut-shaming and body-policing sends a very clear message to women everywhere: you don’t get to make decisions about your own body and sexuality. Everyone else does. And if you don’t do a good enough job meeting our expectations, shame on you.
A rodent-eating snake and a hamster have developed an unusual bond at a zoo in Tokyo, Japan. Their relationship began when zookeepers presented the hamster to the snake as a meal.
However, the rat snake (named Aochan) refused to eat the rodent. The two now share a cage, and the hamster sometimes falls asleep sitting on top of his natural foe. Zookeepers have since named the hamster ‘Gohan’ – the Japanese word for meal.
